Meetings
Preston chess club meets on Wednesdays at 7:30pm at
the Unicorn pub in Preston.
We are one of the strongest clubs in the area, and frequently
enjoy success in local leagues and invidual competitions, but we are also
keen to expand our membership with players of any standard.
What does a chess club do ?
On an ordinary club Wednesday evening its just a case of turning up,
buying a drink and playing informal friendly games with whoever is there.
Experienced players will often play blitz chess, where they have a limited
amount of time (e.g. 5 minutes) to play all their moves, but some people
prefer to take their time, and play a slower game.
Sometimes a mini tournament is organised for the evening, and
there is usually an ongoing club championship played over the whole season.
Chess has a season like the football season where most of the
league competitions take place. Some chess clubs close during the summer, but Preston usually keeps going all year round.
Some evenings there will be a league match on, where a team from Preston
will be playing a team from another club. These are serious games,
played with clocks, and one game will last all evening. Members not engaged in
the match can watch, or just play friendly games, but are normally expected
to try and keep the noise level down so as not to disturb the match.
In the past talks have been organised where a stronger member of the club
explains some aspect of chess, or demonstrates one of their games.
